My favorite songs.

This is one of those posts that stems from a need I have, not any request. I do get asked all the time about my favorite songs and I always kind of fumble around or respond with a request to define "favorite" - favorite of ALL TIME, favorite right now, favorite in a particular genre, favorite from my childhood, etc. It's a genuine problem I have in my life... I don't have one favorite song. I usually say Beast Of Burden by The Rolling Stones or You by The 1975 you know, to make sure I pick the two most different songs ever.

Anyway. I went through all of my playlists and just added songs that I would call my "favorite" and put them into one playlist. It's 69 songs long... it would be longer but Hootie & The Blowfish are not on Spotify. I figured I'd share it with y'all because I love you. A lot.

Enjoy y'all!

#ThrowBackThursday: One Direction's Where We Are Tour in Atlanta. 10.01.14.

It's not exactly a secret that I have a wholeeeeee lot of love for a particular boy band called One Direction. It's also not a secret that I drive y'all absolutely crazy talking about them over and over and over again but I genuinely can't help it. I would stop if I could... unfortunately for y'all, after seeing them live again, that doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon. If ever.

Anyway, I was there for Zayn's headband. I was there for the #1DProposal. I was there for the Man Bun. I was there for it alllllll and I'm counting down the days until my next live One Direction experience.

Also, FYI... you should invite the Modern Magnolias to every concert you ever go to because we are a great time.
No joke, our section was in love with us. We not only slayed a Grease medley but we also dictated that the Macarena be done facing only one direction because it only seemed fitting. Yeah, we were those people and it was the best.

The lighting engineers/pyro people were too legit for this show y'all. It was unreal.

My boys <3
Harry would be mid-yawn while I was trying to capture the cool lights. Whatevz.
Soz y'all, I got a bit artsy with this one...
Little Things will forever be the coolest part of their shows.
Zayn and that headband.
#NarryFeels
I just couldn't resist. I genuinely adore this weirdo.
Also, the angel that is Harry Styles helped a precious guy from Mississippi propose to his girlfriend. Like... got them floor seats and helped orchestrate the entire thing. He was clearly so happy and the rest of the boys loved it. It was absolutely adorable- specifically because his Mama is who got him in touch with the groom.

One of the highlights of the show for me, besides Harry's manbun, was Through The Dark. Now, I like this song but it's never been one of my absolute favorites. Until now. The lighting/video/mic stands/everything was perfection. PERFECTION.

Liam Payne loves the camera. LOVES IT.

"Save that please."

Closeup of our fave Irishman.
Cool stage/stage lights and an angel.

I watched the encore - Kiss You, Little White Lies, Story Of My Life and Best Song Ever, "unplugged" but someone else didn't and this is what happened...
I'm genuinely so proud of my boys. They sold over 3.4 MILLION tickets on this tour. And played to all 3.4 million of those people in just over five months. Can't wait for FOUR to come out next month and then for the On The Road Again Tour next year!!!

Did you attend the Where We Are Tour? What was your favorite moment? Let me know over on Twitter!

Because October isn't just about boobs.

As I wander through the streets of my hometown, I’m overwhelmed by the prominence of one color - pink. Pink is everywhere. I love that local businesses have decided to proudly display their support for the women and men battling breast cancer, as well as remembering those who lost their courageous fight. I am, however, slightly disappointed that we aren’t painting our streets purple at the same time. Why, you ask? Simple. October is also the month in which we should also be supporting Domestic Violence Awareness.

http://www.pinterest.com/pin/363313894910516963/

Did you know?
  • One in every four women will experience a domestic violence situation, while only one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • One in every three women who is a victim of a homicide was killed by her partner.
  • Every NINE SECONDS a woman is battered in the United States. N I N E.
So why is it that we are enthusiastic to educate people about the statistics of breast cancer and encourage mammograms but shy away from educating our family and friends, specifically the women who are most at risk, about domestic violence?

While most states have multiple cancer treatment centers to treat dozens of types of cancers, some states have as few as 10 shelters dedicated to domestic violence victims. In states where the population exceeds millions of people. In states where one in three women will die from a domestic violence situation, there are minimal shelters. Even when there are shelters in place, it's far from enough. A majority of the shelters that are open are run by non-profit organizations- meaning they most likely do not receive state funding to help with operational costs. The shelters that are on their own for funding are sometimes fully reliant on the public’s help to get the necessities to those who need it most. Some shelters have to turn to rejecting women’s requests to seek shelter because of budget cuts or lack of funding.

When I was a senior in high school, I was in a relationship that was unhealthy. I knew it, but was too “in love” to do make a change. While I wasn’t covering bruises or trying to explain why I had injuries, I was injured on the inside. The verbal attacks and constant hurt that I endured from my relationship was breaking me down bit by bit. I was blinded by the (few and far between) romantic gestures that my boyfriend would do, so I assumed that his criticisms of how I looked, or even my Facebook profile picture not being “pretty enough” was just tough love. Tough love. Pretty tough, but no actual love at all. After a few months, and several public embarrassments later, I finally saw the light. But I was lucky. I got out before anything else could have happened to me. I knew from that point on, that I would never let it happen to me again.

Each year, almost $6 billion dollars is committed from different organizations to help fund Breast Cancer research. Thousands of businesses will give part of their profits to organizations such as Susan G Komen, in hopes that they can help aid research and families fighting the good and noble fight. I’m even asked at the end of my purchase at Walgreen’s if I would like to donate money to Susan G Komen during the month of October.  Why are more businesses not offering to donate part of their proceeds to a domestic violence awareness foundation such as the One Love Foundation or the Alpha Chi Omega/Mary Kay Partnership? Why are we so afraid to help these organizations who so desperately need it and raise funds to get them where they need to be? Why are we so quick to raise concern and throw shade to the Ray Rice situation and belittle the women who stay in these violent situations instead of asking what sort of help can be done to BETTER these women’s lives and CHANGE what can happen in the future?

For the remainder of the month of October, I challenge each and every one of you to do something that will positively impact the lives of domestic violence victims and survivors. Use the hashtag #IAmHelpingBecause and spread the positivity in your community. You can even tag @ModernMagnolias on Twitter or Instagram and we will share with our followers what you are doing!
If you aren’t sure what you can do in your community, but you want to help, I am currently taking donations for our local shelters in my hometown of Greenville, SC. You can email me at english.anna@gmail.com if you’d like more information on what you can do!

Remember, paint your town pink AND purple this October!!!

#MusicMonday - 10.06.14

It's #MusicMonday again y'all!!!!!!!!!

http://www.buzzfeed.com/mrloganrhoades/things-that-only-make-sense-when-youre-really-drunk?sub=3465017_3943231?sub=3465017_3943231#4hpj0um
First things first, my boys have a new song. And it's catchy. SO FREAKIN' CATCHY.

1. Steal My Girl - One Direction

Like crawl into your ear and hatch level of catchiness. And I freakin' love it. It has an arena-rock-y vibe and was influenced, clearly, by Journey. I think my only issue is with the lyrics. Like, in what world is someone going to manage to steal a girl away from a member of One Direction?? When they announced the title of the song, I thought it was going to be about them stealing literally everyone else's girl. Now that is a scenario I would believe... Regardless, this is a fun song that will do really well on radio. And you'll probably catch your boyfriend singing it under his breath without realizing what he's actually doing.

2. Like Em Young - Tove Lo

Last week's #MusicMonday post featured Tove Lo. Next week's #MusicMonday post will probably feature Tove Lo. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. This girl power-y, pregame anthem is constantly stuck in my head. And now yours too. #YoureWelcome

3. Feel For Me - Foy Vance

Any artist that has Ed Sheeran's stamp of approval, has my stamp of approval.
Foy may be Irish but this has a blues feel that makes me believe he could be from the South. He has a timeless kind of croon that genuinely makes me happy.

4. Yellow Flicker Beat - Lorde

I don't know what her parents fed her growing up but I need some of it. All of her songs are just. too. good. She's getting me SO darn excited for the new Hunger Games movie y'all. So freakin' excited.

5. Personal - Jessie J

These pipes y'all. These pipes need NO words.

6. Dance With The Devil - Rachel Taylor

This is potentially my new favorite song. With biting lyrics and a synth-infused beat, this is a diva power anthem that goes down smooth. Another good pregame/getting ready song.

7. Shake It Off - Us The Duo

I have never been shy about my feelings for Swifty. However, I find Shake It Off too catchy to ignore. Thankfully, Us The Duo has given me a reason to really love this song and not have to even think about Swifty. #winning

8. Something In The Water - Carrie Underwood

My girl, Carrie, belting about Jesus and baptism? All the chills. It sounds like a typical Carrie Underwood song but it feels like Easter morning. Bonus - she sings Amazing Grace at the end. I heart it. I heart her. #blessed
