Hashtag eyeroll: Clemson "storming the field"

Dear people who write/talk about sports for a living, anyone with a Twitter account and the general populace of haters:

I'm sure in your mind, being on the field after college football games is something that is against the rules and reserved for reallyyyyy big wins. And I get it, you are a fan of a school that doesn't welcome fans on the field/have fans that would respect the field/etc.

I've been going to Clemson football games since before I could walk and I can't remember a time when we didn't "storm the field" (except for maybe during the 2001 season, following the tragedies of 9/11, honestly, I can't remember). Here's the thing though, at Clemson, it's not called "storming the field," it's called meeting at the Paw to sing the alma mater.

Growing up, it was so cool to get to go on the field after games, get autographs from players and meet up with friends and family that sat in a different section. Growing up, most kids have the "He's on the 20, the 10, TOUCHDOWN!" imaginary play in their backyard but at Clemson, we got to do it in Death Valley.

This is the only picture I have from the Notre Dame game this year...

I have pictures of me on the field after games from before I could walk to my last home game as a student. I have pictures from losses. I have pictures where the majority of the people on the field were from the other team. It's just a Clemson thing. The field is open. (And it's practical. The easiest/fastest way to get out of the stadium is to walk up The Hill via the field.)

via sbnation.com/ This was after FSU beat us a few years ago. They enjoyed gathering at the paw...

So, by all means, please keep telling us to act like we've won a game before, telling us that it's disgusting that we "stormed the field," and hating, in general. At this point, I have to assume you like your sad, ignorant state of being.

We'll be here, enjoying our field...

Do player's parents at other schools get to experience this??

Same girl, same.
Enjoy!

Bands on the beach. #HangoutMusicFest

Braid your hair and grab your Ray Bans—it’s festival season, y’all.

http://gurl.tumblr.com/post/80522550235/10-clothes-and-accessories-for-the-ultimate-music
This weekend is the fifth annual Hangout Music Festival, and it is SOLD OUT.  (Like... of freaking course it is. UGH.) Some of this year’s headliners include The Black Keys, The 1975, Outkast, Wiz Khalifa, and Jack Johnson—among many, many others.  It sounds like someone with my eclectic music taste selected this lineup, and I could not be happier.  (Seriously, why did I not buy a ticket?)  As if the killer lineup wasn’t enough, this music festival is on the beach. In the South.  Sign. me. up. Seriously, it's like Coachella minus the dust storms and kale but add Southern accents. So basically how we picture Heaven is going to be.

For all of us who won’t be traveling down to Gulf Shores to partake in the festivities (insert sad face emoji), I’ve made a Hangout Wish List playlist.

Enjoy the amazing lineup via Spotify, and mark your calendars for next year—I have!

“There’s nothing like a music festival.  People are ready to have a good time.  I don’t think anyone comes to a music festival going, ‘I’m going to be a complete bummer today.’”—Gary Clark, Jr.

The #Masters: A Tradition Unlike Any Other

The time has come my friends, it is the coveted week of men and women across the South… it’s Masters Week. For me, this is a week I highlight and circle all over my Lilly Pulitzer planner. I get goose bumps when I see the commercials on CBS. I cry every time I see old footage of past winners. It’s not just a golf tournament to me, it’s a lifestyle. I have had the privilege of attending the Masters for the past 10 years (it would be my whole life but ya know... that whole ban on women thing…) while my family has been going for over 25 years. My dad works for a golf company and introduced me to a world that I revolve my entire spring around (and I have no shame in that statement what-so-ever).
In the past 10 years, I have encountered many DOs and way too many DON’Ts from spending my time on the clubhouse grounds people watching. For those of you attending at some point this week (or maybe in your dreams…who knows), I am writing this list not just to give you advice, but to take you from being a rookie on the course to…. Well, a Master J. From style advice to the incredible food you can consume, I’ll break down the best and worst I’ve seen at Augusta National. (I might even include some cute Southern golfers to keep an eye out for!)
  • #1. DO—find a way to attend a Practice Round. Practice Rounds are the best way to score an autograph, and even pictures (they have a less strict ban on electronic devices. Cameras are permitted these days but I do believe the cell phone ban is still in effect.) Players are much more relaxed and this is the best environment to be around them in.
  • #1. DON’T—hound a player. Just because it’s the Practice Round doesn’t mean you can become Sally Stalker. Security is still in effect, and they are not afraid to use it. Trust me, I’ve seen people thrown out because they just wouldn’t leave Phil and Tiger alone. Chill out y’all… eBay is full of autographs.
  • #2. DO—Find a way to snag an Azalea. And NO I do NOT mean the flower (see below). The Azalea is the signature drink of the Masters. The only snag to this DO is that you have to convince a clubhouse member to get you one, because hard liquor is not served on the grounds. (If you’re there Sunday, let me know. I’ll try and get you the hook up.)
  • #2. DON’T—DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT pick the flowers or any of the greenery on the property. I mean it. The security guys that will kick you out for being a stalker will also find great delight kicking you out for picking the grass or a flower (if they catch you).
  • #3. DO—eat a Pimento Cheese sandwich. It will change your life. I mean it. Plus food at Augusta National is super cheap. You can snag a 12 oz beer and a Pimento Cheese sandwich for $8. EIGHT. That is not a typo.
  • #3. DON’T—be sassy to the staff at Augusta National. They are the most amazing people on the planet. They come from across the world (no joke) to work at Augusta National and for some of them it’s their biggest job for the year. I’ve seen one too many “Southern Gentlemen” treat the workers at Augusta National like the help. Hey dude—they’re being paid to be there AND they get to meet players AND they get to be there the entire week. So I think they win.
  • #4. DO—snag as much Masters apparel as possible, but go towards the end of the day. They begin to re-stock inventory each night before the gates close, and the lines tend to be shorter.
  • #5. DON’T—snag the apparel at the beginning of the day and be THAT person who walks around with THOSE bags all. freaking. day. I dislike people like you because your bags make noise and take up good standing room. Also… don’t look frumpy. You’re at the MASTERS for crying out loud. Bust out the good clothes, and act like you’ve got some class. We all know your mama and daddy would prefer if you did.
  • #6. DO—enjoy every second on those sacred grounds. This might be the only time in your life to be there. Soak in the cheers and jeers, cheer for a player you don’t even know, and if you’re there Sunday stay for the Green Jacket ceremony. It will be something you’ll never forget.

Now for the good stuff… the eye candy J (this list is SOLELY based on my personal opinion. I’ve probably left some out sorry I’m not sorry.)
Southern Players to Watch:

  1. Harris English: thank God we aren’t related because this guy is a total babe. Between his good looks and the fact he’s a UGA grad make him a great catch but apparently he’s a pretty good golfer too. I’m down with all of those things. Harris, if you’re single and you’re reading this.. call me. I wouldn’t even have to change my last name.
  2. Dustin Johnson: sadly DJ is now engaged to Paulina Gretzky (yes daughter of THE Wayne Gretzky) but he is a true Carolina boy. Raised in Columbia, and a graduate of Coastal Carolina University, we know he must be one heck of a party boy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the leaderboard at some point… his time is coming.
  3. Bill Haas: another Carolina boy, but Bill holds a special place in my heart as he is a Greenville, SC native and still calls Greenville home today. Growing up with his sister, I would love nothing more than to see Bill walk away with a Green Jacket come Sunday evening. Plus he’s a Wake Forest grad so you know what that means ladies… he’s smart too.
  4. Webb Simpson: another great product from the Carolinas, but this guy calls North Carolina home. Also an alumnus of Wake Forest, Webb has looks and brains too! He is sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren, so look out for classic outfits making their appearance at August National.
  5. Jordan Spieth: A native of Dallas TX and a former University of Texas golfer, I’m a big fan of Jordan for more reasons than one. Minus the fact that he isn’t quite 21 yet (he’s only 20.. its totally fine.), he’s a good looking guy with a GREAT chance of winning. I’m pulling for him but don’t tell my dad.
  6. Last but certainly not least… Bubba Watson. He might not be “eye candy” to some, but seriously, how can you not love that guy?? From his new Bojangles commercial, to the footage of him crying his eyes out after winning in 2012, Bubba is my kinda guy. Plus he has the replica of the General Lee and honestly that makes him the coolest of all the PGA Golfers. I dare you to disagree.

So there you have it kids! Whether you’re trekking the greens of Augusta National this week, or watching from the comfort of your own home, you’ve now been given some insight on just how things roll at the Masters. If you’re there, come find me. I’ll be the one having a hell of a time.

Find me on twitter and let me know what you think and if you have any do's/don'ts to add to my list!

Carolina Cup- It's a marathon, not a sprint.

http://carolina-cup.org/
It's that time of year ladies. Time to break out your sunhats and sundresses. Carolina Cup is upon us. Since all you Modern Magnolias probably have dresses on dresses on dresses that are beyond perfect for this occasion, we won't even get into all that. We just want to give a little pre-Carolina Cup pep talk for y'all belles heading to Camden on Saturday .

So here it is, short and sweet- Don't be THAT girl.
http://universityprimetime.com/school/ttu/article/38-reasons-every-guy-should-date-a-sorority-girl
You know her. She's the one who starts drinking and loses her phone, shoes, purse and dignity within ten minutes of getting to College Park. She's not just a little drunk, she's a mess. We want y'all to have as much fun as possible, but Modern Magnolias know how to do just that without making a fool of themselves.

Because a lot of you are probably getting to Cup by way of fraternity bros, you're going to be in party mode as soon as you get to the bus.
http://realitytvgifs.tumblr.com/post/77384504162/me-after-this-week#notes
But y'all, it'll be like 6:00 am. PACE YOURSELF. SERIOUSLY. Don't get on the bus and take 13 shots before you leave the parking lot. Chances are you've got to ride at least two hours (maybe more) to get to Camden. Ever sat for two hours while drinking and then stood up? You don't want to be stumbling off of the bus.

http://realitytvgifs.tumblr.com/post/52071396948/monday#notes
Suggestion: Eat breakfast and Bring some snacks. You're going to be day drinking right through lunch time and that is no easy task on an empty stomach. Oh, and bring/drink tons of water. Really though, stay hydrated y'all. Believe it or not, you don't have to black out to have a good time.

Since a large majority of y'all are probably under the age of 21, here's a heads up: THERE WILL BE UNDERCOVER COPS AT CUP. Disclaimer: This is not me condoning underage drinking, nor is it me telling you not to drink. I'm assuming that most of you are in college, so you are fully capable of making your own, adult decisions. With that being said, BE SMART. If you are underage and choose to drink at Carolina Cup, I would suggest maybe not funneling a beer, while standing on the back of a tailgate so that everyone can see you, ya know? You're probably not going to want to draw attention to yourself in that way (really regardless of your age).

http://storify.com/ShawnTeflon/carolina-cup
And if you DO get questioned by the police, I beg of you, don't run from them. True life: I have seen a guy get tackled by a cop at Cup. Please don't get tackled by a cop at Cup. They'll handcuff you and make you ride on the police golf cart and then take you away to I don't know where. NOT FUN.

With all of that being said, if you see one of your friends getting on the verge of being "that girl," hand her a bottle of water and some crackers and tell her to pump the brakes.
http://realitytvgifs.tumblr.com/post/79163649132/1-day-until-rhony-season-6#notes
Friends don't let friends get trampled by horses at Cup. Use the buddy system to keep tabs on your besties so they don't get out of control.
http://fuckyeahheavyweights.tumblr.com/post/59031400002
Not trying to be the Fun Police, we just want all of you to be safe and responsible, and HAVE FUN DUH!
http://realitytvgifs.tumblr.com/post/77072424444/spankmehardbarry-when-u-finally-convince-ur#notes
It's a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourselves and be smart. And if you get really over whoever you're hanging out with...
http://realitytvgifs.tumblr.com/post/78776251723#notes
..find Caroline and me!! We'll be there with bells on!

Happy Carolina Cup! Much love, y'all!

#SXSW - you NEED to be there

It’s well known that everything is bigger in Texas. We’ve already talked about ACL, but I wanted to talk to y’all today about another big deal in Austin...SXSW. Now, for those of you literally living under a rock, SXSW stands for South by Southwest. SX is a conference/festival/party comprised of three major components; music, film, and (my personal favorite) interactive. Tickets are INSANELY expensive, which is why I usually tend to just hit up all the parties (#postgradprobz), but if you’re able to afford them they’re well worth the money. Packages vary, but I’ll let the SXSW website explain that if you’re really want more details.

SXSW-1r2wefy.png
www.sxsw.com
Now, you may be thinking, “Okay, so music and film are obviously just a bunch of concerts and movies.” That, my dear reader, is where you are wrong. Both music and film not only showcase upcoming talent in both areas, but also host conferences for aspiring filmmakers/musicians with a number of panels on a plethora of topics. For example, remember that Spring Breakers movie? James Franco and Selena Gomez were both in town to promote the film, and stuck around for a Q&A sesh after the film’s screening.

http://www.justjared.com/photo-gallery/2828695/selena-gomez-ashley-benson-spring-breakers-sxsw-premiere-05/fullsize/
So when I say you’re getting a bang for your buck ticket wise, I mean it. I can’t even begin to give a list of the performers heading to Austin without getting a huge swell of jealousy over the fact that this year I won’t be there (go explore the SX official website because there are literally SO. MANY.).

http://www.eonline.com/news/517951/lady-gaga-announces-debut-sxsw-performance-says-she-can-t-wait-to-rock-austin-all-the-details
If you’re in town, head to Waterloo Records at the corner of 6th and Lamar (across from Whole Foods) for some free shows including acts such as The 1975 (C is crying while reading this... they are her FAVES), Jake Bugg and Cash Cash. They featured Macklemore and Ryan Lewis pre-Thrift Shop blow up, so you’re bound to see the next big thing! Perez Hilton always hosts a party and it's usually a great lineup of who you need to NOW.

Moving on to Interactive. Y’all know that we are BIIIIIIG techies and that love being the first in the know about new products and startups (I know, huge nerds. Whatever). So Interactive is my absolute all time favorite section of SX because that is where all that goodness is presented. This year, we’ll see a lot of talk regarding wearable technology for tracking exercise and other activities (think Fitbits) as well as apps like Whisper, 3-D printing and other hot topics in the tech world. One of the Mythbusters, Adam Savage, will be a keynote speaker for Interactive this year, along with astrophysicist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson.

sxsw-interactive.jpg
http://variety.com/2014/biz/festivals/sxsw-forget-music-and-movies-interactive-is-where-the-drama-lies-1201124750/
As I mentioned before, tickets are pretty pricey. Living in Austin, I wanted to experience every part of SXSW but wasn’t sure how to get around not having a wristband to get into events. Luckily, there’s a website devoted to every single free SXSW party and after-party that you can attend! All you have to do is RSVP, which the site can do for you (make an account and RSVP for everything. It’s SO worth it), and you’re basically good to go. A number of celebs tend to hit these parties and 6th Street, such as the boys from Workaholics (true story, I met Blake downtown and have photographic proof), Andy Cohen from Bravo and even tech geniuses like Bill Gates. You seriously never know who will show up last minute and who you’ll accidentally bump into en route to the ladies room of your favorite bar.

If you have the chance to go either to SXSW itself or even just the parties, GO. You’ll get to network with awesome people while being in one of the best cities in Texas, and you’ll leave with an unforgettable experience and the desire to come back the following year.

Who would you most like to bump into at SXSW? Tweet @ModernMagnolias and let us know! (Amelia would like to bump into and take a selfie with Andy Cohen or Seth Meyers!)

Southern Beaus in the #SuperBowl

Somehow I always get assigned the task of stalking some sports team’s roster for good looking southern beaus (which I totally do NOT hate by the way). So, with the Super Bowl coming up, obvi this had to happen again. We all know Modern Magnolias love any excuse to be social, so I know y’all will be at Super Bowl parties on Sunday. If anything, this post will help you drop some names and impress and beaus you’re watching the game with. FYI: the teams playing in Super Bowl XLVIII are the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos.

But before I begin, let me say this: I do not actively keep up with professional football. Don’t get me wrong, I understand football and enjoy watching it (college football for the most part), so this post is not based on a players statistics and how many years they’ve been in the NFL, and is in absolutely no way an analysis of the teams. It’s based on important questions, like: Are these beaus Southern? Do I think they’re cute? Did they attend college in the South? Bonus points if I think they have a cool name.

Let’s start with the Seahawks:
1. Doug Baldwin-#89

Baldwin got drafted to the Seahawks as a free agent in 2011, and from what I learned via Wikipedia he’s done pretty well for the Seahawks, so he’ll play on Sunday for sure (via my expert analysis). Also, he apparently has his own YouTube series called “Fresh Files.”

Age: 25
Hometown: Gulf Breeze, Florida
Position: Wide receiver
College: Stanford University (not in the South, but we’ll forgive him because he’s pretty)
Twitter: @DougBaldwinJr

2. J.R. Sweezy-#64

Okay literally half the reason he’s on this list is his name. Like he just sounds like a professional athlete. The internet tells me that he’s played 28 games for the Seahawks and started 18, so here’s to hoping we see him on Sunday night!

Age: 24
Hometown: Mooresville, North Carolina
Position: Offensive Guard
College: NC State

3. Clint Gresham-#49
-

Age: 27
Hometown: Corpus Chisti, Texas
Position: Long snapper
College: Texas Christian University, Oklahoma State University
Twitter: @Gresh49

Now for the Broncos:
1. Britton Colquitt-#4

This is him being adorable with his family (I’m assuming), wearing cowboy boots.. SWOON.

He’s married (bummer), but it’s okay to look, right?!

Age: 28
Hometown: Knoxville, Tennessee
Position: Punter
College: University of Tennessee

 2. Wes Welker-#83
-

Soooo he’s married too, but whatever. It’s clear he thinks he’s a model and I don’t hate it. And Wikipedia says he’s like really good so he will definitely be catching some passes on Sunday night.

Age: 32
Hometown: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Position: Wide Receiver/Return Specialist
College: Texas Tech University
Twitter: @WesWelker

And last, but certainly not least…

3. Peyton Manning-#18

Yeah, I know he’s wearing a Colts uniform, but LOVING THE BLACK AND WHITE Y’ALL.

He may be getting close to 40 but obviously I could not leave this beau off the list. If you don’t know who Peyton Manning is, you’re probably living under a rock. He played for the Colts for forevs and started playing for the Broncos in 2012. Manning already has a Super Bowl championship under his belt but is seeking his first as a Bronco. Confession: I will probably be a bandwagon fan for the Broncos on Sunday night for the sole reason that I know who Peyton Manning is. And let’s be honest y’all, you would want your husband to look like him when he’s close to 40.

Age: 37
Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana
Position: Quarterback
College: University of Tennessee

So obviously there are more Southern beaus that play for the Seahawks and the Broncos but there was no way to include them all. Comment below or tweet us any that we left off. Seriously, I’m going to be watching the game and I wouldn’t mind knowing which man candy to be on the lookout for while I’m waiting on the Bruno Mars concert and watching the commercials.

Bonus facts that you can throw out at any point during whatever Super Bowl party you’re attending, in case you’re like me and literally don’t anything about either team:
  • This will be the Broncos’ seventh Super Bowl appearance. If they lose, it’ll be their fifth loss.
  • The Seahawks have the NFL’s top-ranked defense in both scoring and yards and the Broncos have the top-ranked offense in both scoring and yards.
  • Peyton Manning’s younger brother already has two Super Bowl rings, so like there has to be some pressure to catch up to baby bro. Peyton’s also trying to be first quarterback to win the Super Bowl as starter for two different teams.
  • Forbes.com tells me that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are also playing at half time.. WHO KNEW?!
Happy Super Bowl partying y’all!

#SaturdaysDownSouth: Austin City Limits edition

via www.craveonline.com
It’s a new week, and as I sat at my internship earlier today, all I was doing was dreaming of my ACL experience. This past two weekends, I was lucky enough to experience the Austin City Limits Music Festival, held at the gorgeous Zilker Park in Austin, Texas.

Since it’s beginning in 2002, ACL has become famous for hosting over 150 different acts, with a wide variety of genres represented (meaning there’s something for everyone). Like Coachella but with a Southern twist, the festival has grown to be so large that a second weekend was necessary!

I attended the first of the two weekends, and I can honestly say that I am so glad I did (and not just because Weekend Two happens to be during the TX/OU game AND my friend’s wedding…). I feel as though Weekend One-ers get to see the acts flaws and all, which only betters the experience.

The first act I saw? Vampire Weekend. Anyone who knows me knows I was #DYING over the fact that I was finally able to see my favorite band play live, and there was no disappointment in their set. I headed over to Kaskade next, and was able to squeeze to the front and dance my heart out. My group then headed to see Muse, a band which put on a great performance. We left ACL that first night exhausted, but ready for what the next day had to offer.

That next day, our group split up and I went down early with a friend to catch Portugal. The Man. Instead of sitting through the show, we waited in the super long line for the ACL Fest frame picture (totally worth it) while waiting to meet up with everyone else.

We had an hour in between Portugal and Passion Pit, so we explored the food truck tents. Passion Pit, famous for songs like Sleepyhead and Little Secrets, had the crowd going with a more chill vibe, which was perfect seeing as Kendrick Lamar was performing right after! Kendrick killed his set; I wasn't a huge fan before, but after seeing him live, I’m a changed #MM! We ended the night at Kings of Leon, who teased the crowd by taking exceptionally long break before their encore performance, which ended with Sex on Fire.

The final day of ACL consisted of starting off at Paper Diamond (who’s going to be HUGE y’all, I can feel it), catching the first thirty minutes of Grouplove’s set, then running over to Franz Ferdinand, heading back to Toro Y Moi, seeing Eric Church (an odd choice for ACL, but great nonetheless), running to Phoenix, and ending the night at Atoms for Peace. It was exhausting, but definitely worth it to try and get our last fill (for those of us not coming back for Weekend Two) of all that is ACL.

Will I be back? You better believe it. I highly advise that if you live in Austin (or will be visiting), you make sure to check this off your list. You definitely won’t regret it!

(ACL 2014 is definitely on my bucket list y'all!! Amelia has me dying to go. -C. xx.)

Did you go to ACL?? What was your favorite act? Let me know!!
