#GRAMMYs recap

If you know me or have followed me for any extended amount of time, you know I love a good awards show. The #GRAMMYs are, arguably, my favorite. The outfits are kind of ridiculous. They performance are out of this world. And they give out, like, four awards.

As usual, this year's ceremony was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Let's be real, kicking off anything with Beyonce and Jay Z is going to be ahhhhmazing.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattbellassai/

But... let's not get ahead of ourselves. We have the Red Carpet to discuss. The #GRAMMYs Red Carpet is always the one where music's biggest stars (minus One Direction, Rihanna, Kanye and Justin Timberlake oddly...) get to have a little fun.

Who We Loved:
1. Katy Perry
http://nymag.com/thecut/
So this literally just came from the couture runway show in Paris. Like, as in, last week... And who else could pull this off? Exactly. I will say, I liked it on the runway better. But, duh. (I think it has something to do with the lining.)
http://nymag.com/thecut/
2. Ciara
http://nymag.com/thecut/
Talk about glowing. This Modern Magnolia showed the world how to do pregnancy chic the right way. In custom Pucci, she absolutely showed every mom-to-be on the #GoldenGlobes Red Carpet how it's done.

3. Jared Leto
http://www.justjared.com
Beautiful Louisiana beau, Jared Leto, has been a flawless human being at every awards show this year. And then he showed a different type of flawless- the one reminding you that he is, in fact, in a rock band. Like seriously, I want his ombre.

Who Almost Got It Right
1. Kacey Musgraves
http://www.justjared.com/
So close, Kacey, so so so close. I like this dress, I think. I like this color, too. But it's too short and there's something off about the fit... But HUGE congrats on her win last night!!

2. Anna Kendrick
http://nymag.com/thecut
Again, so close Anna. Her hair looks fabulous but the top of the dress is just a little off. I'm not sure... Oh well.

Favorite LOL Moment

The hats at this event were crazy. None more noteworthy than Pharrell's first hat.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/
I mean, look at that thing. There were literally millions of tweets about it (at one point "Pharrell's hat" was a trending topic in the United States) but none were more PERFECT than this one:
It came pretty quickly and was simple and on point. As a #socialmedia nerd, I was giddy. And the rest of the world's #socialmedia nerds were too-

And of course, Pharrell being the perfect human that he is, responded in the most amazing way possible:
The Actual Ceremony
1. Beyonce and Jay Z opened the show and slayed. Like we all knew they would. Also, my new favorite word is "Surfboardt."
http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattbellassai
http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattbellassai

2. Lorde is the most perfect little goth ever.
http://www.buzzfeed.com
She took home a couple gramophones and her reaction to her first win was the absolutely most perfect reaction of any white girl ever...
http://www.buzzfeed.com/
Like, same girl. Same.

3. Kendrick Lamar & Imagine Dragons
This was my favorite performance of the night. I have been complaining about Kendrick getting robbed by Macklemore for the last week and a half and I was so happy that he showed the entire #GRAMMYs voting committee what they didn't reward. It was such a great performanceeee.
http://perezhilton.com/
And then there was this...

I have no words other than UGH.

4. Get Lucky
The dance party that happened during the Daft Punk + Pharrell + Stevie Wonder performance was unreal. Can you even imagine what it would feel like to be performing your song and look out to see Steven Tyler, Yoko Ono, Jay Z, etc. etc. etc. having an absolute dance party? Ahhhhhmazing.
http://perezhilton.com/
www.perezhilton.com
And... they won a couple of awards and the speeches were hilarious.
www.buzzfeed.com
5. The Highwaymen
http://www.rollingstone.com/
So for most people attending last night and talking about it today, this performance didn't make their top moments. These people suck. I genuinely shed a tear during "Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys." For anyone that loves country music, this was absolute magic. I got kind of excited on Twitter-
But seriously, I can't believe people are so nonchalant about this performance. Especially with the lack of country music representation... because, clearly, this doesn't count.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/
(But in all seriousness, I can't stop watching this GIF. It is so weirdly mesmerizing...)

6. 2/4 Beatles > 3/3 Jonas Brothers
This moment needs no description. If you didn't love it, you don't deserve to be allowed to listen to music.
www.perezhilton.com
www.buzzfeed.com
And finally, I will leave you with this because LOLZ.

So there you have it. The Super Bowl of the music world was amazing and I'm already counting down the days until next year's ceremony when Beyonce's surprise album sweeps all the awards.

#GRAMMYs Preview!!

It's almost here, it's almost here!! The Super Bowl of the music world, the Grammy Awards, are this Sunday night and to say we're excited is a complete understatement.
http://detectivesexymcbadass.tumblr.com/post/17534696301/sophia-grace-rosie-the-54th-annual-grammy
This awards show, like most, is less about handing out awards and more about the industry showing off... which we are F I N E with. But seriously, in the span of a few hours, there will be 20 (possibly 21) performances and they'll probably hand out seven awards.

What we're excited to see:
1. Beyonce and Jay Z
http://braindeaddrama.tumblr.com/post/73966211227/this-face-means-more-to-me-than-any-human-ever
Like, freaking duhhh. It will be Queen B's first performance since she surprised the entire world with a really, really, really great album and these two together? It's going to be amazinggg. And it will be a nice preview/reminder for allllllll of the Grammys she's going to rack up at next year's show.
http://www.eonline.com/
Bonus: remember last year when that random dude thanked Jay Z and this magical moment happened?
http://www.eonline.com/
2. Lorde
http://wifflegif.com/tags/162080-tennis-courts-gifs
This 17-year-old genius took the world by storm this year. Royals is just one of those songs that will never get old. She's nominated for a few awards and is performing too... and this is the first time she's even been invited to the Grammys. Talk about a boss. Also, she has fun dance moves when she performs so that will be fun to watch!
http://www.vulture.com/
3. Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Blake Shelton
http://nbcthevoice.tumblr.com/post/62858830967/aggressively-smashes-button
We have no idea what they're singing or why but we know that you don't get to see this kind of performance every day. It will some good ole' fashioned pickin' and singin' and, honestly, the world could use a lit more of that. Also... the rehearsals had to have been hilarious. Someone send us the bloopers. Like, for real.

What we're not so excited to see:
1. Highway Robbery
http://giphy.com/search/thrift-shop/
We love Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. For real. It's really hard not to. They make really catchy songs that are fun to dance around to. However... we have a feeling they are going to rack up the awards and while some of them are absolutely deserved (Best New Artist), some of them will be absolute robbery- like taking Best Rap Performance over Drake, Eminem, Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar for Thrift Shop; not even Can't Hold Us, White Walls or Same Love but THRIFT SHOP. We hope we're wrong but probably not...
http://giphy.com/gifs/G04HgWWedAwFy
2. Our Favorite Person, Ever
Not only is Swifty performing, hashtag eyeroll, but she's nominated for Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year. Like, HOW HAVE WE NOT MOVED PAST THIS?!
http://rebloggy.com/
And let's not forget last year's performance when she felt the need to make a dig at her teenager-ex-boyfriend who was in Ghana doing charity work...
http://perezhilton.com/
We were talking over a drinking game where every time a camera showed Swifty awkwardly white girl dancing you had to drink but quickly decided that would lead to alcohol poisoning so... we scrapped it.
http://perezhilton.com/
Be sure to check back here Monday for a Red Carpet recap and follow along during the ceremony on Twitter- @RulesForBelles will be live-tweeting up a storm.

Enjoy!

#MMLovesTech: Apps We Love

I firmly believe that each year should begin with a cleanse. No, I’m not talking about a juice cleanse (I do love those, but that’s a whole different story…), but rather a technology cleanse. How does this work? Easy. First, you go through your phone and delete contacts you either don’t know or have removed from your life (cough ex-boyfriends).

via http://greatrhodeybutt.tumblr.com/
Next up? Apps. Now, when it comes to apps, I generally try out a ton and then weed out the ones I know I’ll never use. In doing this, I have found several tried and true apps that I believe every #ModernMagnolia should have...and I’m sharing them with you because duh.

via http://messageme.com/
MessageMe is one of my favorite free messaging apps. I use it almost every day, primarily to talk to friends who are not #TeamiPhone (ahem... Caroline). Like regular messaging, you’re able to send texts and pictures, but you can also send songs from iTunes, videos from YouTube or Doodles. It's a wayyy better messaging experience than plain old texting. You can create groups based on whatever you desire AND you can name them whatever you want!

via http://www.mailboxapp.com/
I can’t even begin to tell y’all how much I love Mailbox. I was one of those people who joined the waitlist for the app and the insane wait was worth it. Better than the iPhone’s native Mail app, Mailbox allows you to delegate emails into groups, remind you about them at a later time and provides you with a great Instagram image once you hit “Inbox Zero” (you’ll quickly get addicted to the feeling of hitting zero, trust me).

via http://myndcalendar.com/
Oh, Mynd, how I love you so. This calendar app syncs with your Facebook (as well as the native iPhone calendar) to bring you everything you could possibly need in a calendar. It shows the weather, the places you’ll be traveling to that day (if included in your events for the day), what your next meeting is and how many you have left. BONUS- it even tells you what time you need to leave your current location in order to make it to your next event. As a big calendar person, I’m a huge fan of how clean and efficient this app is.

via https://www.thehunt.com/iphone
Have you ever seen an outfit you love on Pinterest or on TV, but have no idea where you could actually get it? Enter in The Hunt, a collaborative app in which users from all over help others hunt down certain items and find either the exact piece or near replicas. I’ve been able to find so many of my favorited Pinterest clothing items that I didn’t think were even still available, so needless to say, this app is a keeper!

via https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/happy-hours
A common question when I’m deciding on weekend plans with friends is where the best Happy Hour deals are. Luckily for us, we have the Happy Hours app! The best part about this app? It shows every happy hour in your area, listing the times it’s going on as well as any additional specials they may be having. Through this app, we’ve been able to find some great hidden treasures, as well as hit up local favorites.

via https://www.quizup.com/
I. Love. QuizUp. My younger brother was actually the one who introduced me to the app, with the fair warning that it would become an addiction...and man, was he right. I love that I can challenge my friends who have it and I love that there are so many topics to choose from. My top three most played categories? Game of Thrones, One Direction and The O.C. #sorrynotsorry

via https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bleach-london
Ok. This app is completely ridiculous and a really addictive way to waste time. Basically, it's a way to make your photos look like Lisa Frank (circa NOW) got a hold of them. The Bleach app has a built in "Selfie Booth" with tonsss of filters, stickers, backgrounds, borders and more. It's really fun to play with. It serves no real purpose other than making awesome images like these:

What you SHOULD be watching...

http://gifs-for-the-masses.tumblr.com/post/19600575385
As a self-proclaimed television enthusiast, I am usually watching an insane amount of TV shows at any given time. Despite my growing list of programs, I am always looking for new series to get caught up in. While I do a lot of my watching on Netflix or HBOgo, it’s nice to have new series on TV where you don’t feel like you have to stay up until 3:00 am binge watching, because obvi I am going to watch the next episode, Netflix. With all that being said, here’s my list of what television I’m getting excited about for the beginning of 2014—new series, returning series, and everything in between.

True Detective-HBO

So if you don’t have HBO, or at least access to someone’s HBOgo account, here’s your reason to get it. True Detective alternates between 1995 and 2012, where two mismatched detectives reflect on their lives during a seventeen year manhunt for a serial killer. Now, I watched the series premiere on Sunday, and it was.. interesting. Really, REALLY good, but nothing like any crime drama I have seen before. This is a show that is going to have like nothing happen and then BAM it’s going to hit you like a ton of bricks; the storyline will definitely continue to develop throughout the season. I loved the pilot and this show has been at the top of every list I have seen for what to watch this year and has gotten great reviews, so I would definitely recommend y’all giving this one a shot. I get that this may not sound like your cup of tea, but you can bet the fact that Texas boys Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson star in this has got me on board. And y’all, it’s set and filmed in Louisiana. Apparently the show is going to use an anthology format (think American Horror Story--each season will be a different storyline/cast of characters). Color me intrigued.

Turn-AMC

For you history buffs: Turn is based on a true story, set in 1778, which tells “the untold story of America’s first spy ring,” formed by a New York farmer and a group of friends, who help turn the tide in America’s fight for independence from Great Britain. TV.com tells me that the premiere date for Turn will be April 6th, and AMC has already starting airing trailers. Now, I am obsessed with Revolutionary War history, so obviously I am super excited for this show. Even if you’re not a history guru, consider this: AMC has been churning out successful series for the last couple of years (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead), so you can expect Turn to be a hit. If nothing else, we’ll probably get to see some good looking men in colonial uniforms, and definitely some swoon-worthy British accents. YES PLEASE.

Mixology-ABC
Y’all, it’s from the writers of The Hangover. Done, I’m in. But besides the fact that it’s probably going to be hilarious, Mixology has a really interesting format. The entire season takes place in a Manhattan bar, and chronicles the exploits of ten singles (five guys and five girls) over the course of a single night. Not much to say about this, as it doesn’t premiere until February 26th, but I think the trailer looks hysterical.

Private Lives of Nashville Wives-TNT

Clearly I wasn’t going to leave out the reality television category. To be honest, I haven’t heard much about this show, but it’s probably consists of Real Housewives-esque southern women with plenty of drama and sass to go around. Private Lives of Nashville Wives premieres on February 24th on TNT. It features a former soap opera star and a former Hooters girl. So yes, I’ll be watching.

Shows we love returning for new seasons: Game of Thrones (April 6th on HBO) and Mad Men (AMC-sometime this spring). In the reality TV competition category, American Idol (Jan. 15th on Fox), The Voice (Feb. 24th on NBC), and Dancing With The Stars (on ABC in March).

Y’all know I have to give a shout out to my favorite Netflix original series: House of Cards (South Carolina Congressman basically running politics in D.C.) returns for its second season on February 14th. Looks like I’ll be spending my Valentine’s Day with the diabolical Frank Underwood.

Moving to a different kind of television...

NBC is going to be super busy in February. I am definitely looking forward to watching SNL alums Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers take over late night television. With Jimmy Fallon moving to Tonight on February 17th and Seth Meyers taking over Fallon’s gig on Late Night on February 24th, look for lots of hilariousness on late night TV. And y’all don’t think I forgot about the Olympics. The opening ceremony coverage is on NBC on February 7th, and clearly I will be live tweeting this. Look out for more about the Olympics from Modern Magnolias in February—you know we love some figure skating.

via bleacher report

Even if Team USA doesn’t win gold, can I still dress up as one of the blondes for Halloween? Any excuse to wear sequins..

Award Shows

While there are definitely too many award shows to name them all, these are the ones I am most looking forward to:
56th Annual Grammy Awards-Jan 26th at 8 pm on CBS—Obvi @ModernMagnolias will be live tweeting this.
86th Annual Academy Awards (THE OSCARS Y’ALL)-March 2nd on ABC—Here’s to hoping Jennifer Lawrence is pulling the same shenanigans we saw at the Golden Globes. She’s perf.
23rd Annual MTV Movie Awards-April 13th on MTV—We hope Miley shows up and does something cray.
49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards-in April on CBS—Hunter Hayes, this is my official request to be your date.
I’ll take that as a yes.

Now there was no way to cover all the television I’m excited about for the first part of of 2014, so tweet us @ModernMagnolias with your favorites we left off! And if you need any TV suggestions, I’m your girl: tweet me @LaurenReddeck!

Happy watching!
