Gimme, gimme Mø!

Remember wayyyyy back when, when I tried to tell y'all about Lorde and no one would listen to me? Remember how she BLEW UP after that? So believe me when I tell you this is about to blow your mind.

Karen Marie Ørsted a.k.a Mø isn't the least bit Southern but we don't care. Anyone who was (let's be real, is) as obsessed with the Spice Girls as we are is aces in our book.

Enjoy!

#SXSW - you NEED to be there

It’s well known that everything is bigger in Texas. We’ve already talked about ACL, but I wanted to talk to y’all today about another big deal in Austin...SXSW. Now, for those of you literally living under a rock, SXSW stands for South by Southwest. SX is a conference/festival/party comprised of three major components; music, film, and (my personal favorite) interactive. Tickets are INSANELY expensive, which is why I usually tend to just hit up all the parties (#postgradprobz), but if you’re able to afford them they’re well worth the money. Packages vary, but I’ll let the SXSW website explain that if you’re really want more details.

SXSW-1r2wefy.png
www.sxsw.com
Now, you may be thinking, “Okay, so music and film are obviously just a bunch of concerts and movies.” That, my dear reader, is where you are wrong. Both music and film not only showcase upcoming talent in both areas, but also host conferences for aspiring filmmakers/musicians with a number of panels on a plethora of topics. For example, remember that Spring Breakers movie? James Franco and Selena Gomez were both in town to promote the film, and stuck around for a Q&A sesh after the film’s screening.

http://www.justjared.com/photo-gallery/2828695/selena-gomez-ashley-benson-spring-breakers-sxsw-premiere-05/fullsize/
So when I say you’re getting a bang for your buck ticket wise, I mean it. I can’t even begin to give a list of the performers heading to Austin without getting a huge swell of jealousy over the fact that this year I won’t be there (go explore the SX official website because there are literally SO. MANY.).

http://www.eonline.com/news/517951/lady-gaga-announces-debut-sxsw-performance-says-she-can-t-wait-to-rock-austin-all-the-details
If you’re in town, head to Waterloo Records at the corner of 6th and Lamar (across from Whole Foods) for some free shows including acts such as The 1975 (C is crying while reading this... they are her FAVES), Jake Bugg and Cash Cash. They featured Macklemore and Ryan Lewis pre-Thrift Shop blow up, so you’re bound to see the next big thing! Perez Hilton always hosts a party and it's usually a great lineup of who you need to NOW.

Moving on to Interactive. Y’all know that we are BIIIIIIG techies and that love being the first in the know about new products and startups (I know, huge nerds. Whatever). So Interactive is my absolute all time favorite section of SX because that is where all that goodness is presented. This year, we’ll see a lot of talk regarding wearable technology for tracking exercise and other activities (think Fitbits) as well as apps like Whisper, 3-D printing and other hot topics in the tech world. One of the Mythbusters, Adam Savage, will be a keynote speaker for Interactive this year, along with astrophysicist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson.

sxsw-interactive.jpg
http://variety.com/2014/biz/festivals/sxsw-forget-music-and-movies-interactive-is-where-the-drama-lies-1201124750/
As I mentioned before, tickets are pretty pricey. Living in Austin, I wanted to experience every part of SXSW but wasn’t sure how to get around not having a wristband to get into events. Luckily, there’s a website devoted to every single free SXSW party and after-party that you can attend! All you have to do is RSVP, which the site can do for you (make an account and RSVP for everything. It’s SO worth it), and you’re basically good to go. A number of celebs tend to hit these parties and 6th Street, such as the boys from Workaholics (true story, I met Blake downtown and have photographic proof), Andy Cohen from Bravo and even tech geniuses like Bill Gates. You seriously never know who will show up last minute and who you’ll accidentally bump into en route to the ladies room of your favorite bar.

If you have the chance to go either to SXSW itself or even just the parties, GO. You’ll get to network with awesome people while being in one of the best cities in Texas, and you’ll leave with an unforgettable experience and the desire to come back the following year.

Who would you most like to bump into at SXSW? Tweet @ModernMagnolias and let us know! (Amelia would like to bump into and take a selfie with Andy Cohen or Seth Meyers!)

Bravo's Southern Charm - ugh.

http://gayestofalltime.com/2014/02/26/the-upper-east-side-reviews-bravo-tvs-southern-charm/
Y'all, it's happening. Bravo released the preview at the beginning of the year and now the premiere date for its new "reality" TV show, Southern Charm, is upon us. For those of you who haven't heard about Southern Charm, it follows the shenanigans of six (seemingly well-to-do) singles in Charleston, South Carolina. Now y'all, I visit Charleston on a regular basis, and I am not exactly sure what to think about this. Granted I am absolutely not running in the same circles as these people on the show, but still, I have always loved Charleston so I seriously hope the reputation of such a beloved city isn't ruined. It seems that reality television these days is hell bent on making Southerners look ridiculous, and this show seems to be no exception. So on that note, let's take a look at the cast who will inevitably be making fools of themselves this season. **DISCLAIMER** If some of these facts are wrong, blame Bravo's website and Wikipedia. Also, couldn't find ages for some of these people. Soz.

Craig Conover, 25
via Bravo
-He's from Delaware (AKA NOT SOUTHERN). I expect to hear a lot of forced "y'alls" and a fake southern accent
-Was going to/did (don't know, don't care) play college baseball.. I'm sure we'll hear about it like at least twice an episode
-I think he's an attorney (jk y'all... he's still in law school)

Cameran Eubanks, 30
via Bravo

-APPARENTLY WAS ON THE REAL WORLD?!?!?!
-^^literally everything I need to know about her... Hot tub makeout - soooooo rEaL wOrLd Y'aLl.
http://starcasm.net/archives/262735
Thomas Ravenel, 48
(Wikipedia says 51?! Regardless, WAY TOO OLD TO BE ON THIS SHOW.)
via Bravo

-From Charleston
-Rich, rich, RICH
-Former State Treasurer for South Carolina
-Got arrested for purchasing cocaine (I think? It had something to do with cocaine..)

Shepard "Shep" Rose, 34
via Bravo
-Originally from Hilton Head
-Looks like he's lived all over the place (Seriously, like, he's lived in Dubai)
-When he lived in South Florida he, in his own words, "partied with some ridiculous and highly entertaining aristocrats" (COOL STORY BRO)

Whitney Sudler-Smith
via Bravo
-Has lived in Los Angeles
-Writes screenplays and makes independent films. I have never heard of any of them that were in his bio on Bravo's website. I'm not listing them, so I guess check them out if you're curious?
-Apparently he likes to "maintain his dungeon" in his free time. Am I missing something? Seriously, I would like someone to explain this to me. If there is an actual dungeon, CRAZY PLOT TWIST FOR THE SEASON FINALE.
-Look out for his mother, Patricia Altschul, to be the real star of this show. First episode? Pink Birkin to match her pink gun. For real.
-Also, his cousin is engaged to Sophia Vergara. Hopefully she'll make an appearance!

Jenna King, 28
via Bravo
-Grew up in Sumter, South Carolina but has lived loads of places
-Seems that she's currently designing a line of gloves. DON'T WORRY SHE ISN'T STOPPING THERE. Jenna is "hoping to expand into sunglasses."
-Not overly sure how she navigates cobblestone streets in those shoes but good for her.

So, that's the cast. This is an official description of the show from Bravo's website:

"New series Southern Charm goes behind the walls of Charleston, South Carolina's most aristocratic families to reveal a world of exclusivity, money and scandal that goes back generations."

Now, I could be wrong, and I'm sure these people all have wonderful families, but we've got a former Real World-er in the cast, y'all. I'm not sure that these would qualify as the "most aristocratic families" in Charleston. It should literally just be like "these people live in Charleston and hang out together/we are making them hang out together and we're going to film it." But regardless of how I feel, I can bet y'all one thing, I know there are some Charlestonians not too happy with how the Holy City and its people are going to be portrayed. And I could be wrong. Really. Perhaps it'll be a delightfully refreshing show about the grace and charm of these fine, Southern men and women. Maybe I'll eat my words. Probably not, but maybe.

If you know me at all, you know that I love the inevitable train wreck that is reality TV so clearly I will be live tweeting this. Seriously though, as long as Andy Cohen is doing the reunion show, I am 100% watching so I can be in on all the drama. Will literally be on the edge of my seat, waiting for someone to say, "bless their heart" or call someone "trash."

http://college-life-crisis.tumblr.com/post/78264662409/when-someone-else-calls-my-best-friend-their-best
Happy watching!

P.S. Do I get bonus points if I can find the cameras next time I'm in Charleston? Challenge accepted.

#Oscars - Pics or it didn't happen!

In case you live under a rock (or were watching The Walking Dead like Lauren), you watched the #Oscars last night. I live-tweeted the red carpet- (we'll have a separate post regarding what everyone wore, don't worry) so this is my official apology for alllllllll of those tweets...

We put together a list of some of our favorite moments- nothing else reallllyyy mattered, honestly.

1. Louisiana beau and hair ICON, Jared Leto, made the entire night about his mama- like any good Southern boy would.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/the-best-moments-from-2014-academy-awards
His speech was so touching and so eloquent and it solidified my love for him.

http://kikerowling.tumblr.com/post/78421555956/lovely-speech-jared-leto-is-an-amazing-person
I mean... #swoon.

2. Best pizza party ever.

http://the-time-lord-of-the-rings.tumblr.com/post/78417720923
NOLA native and best host ever, Ellen DeGeneres, told everyone she was going to order a pizza but I don't think anyone believed her. But I immediately had this gif playing in my head-

http://beneaththe-durbanskies.tumblr.com/post/78409957952/it-finally-happened
BUT THEN IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

http://beneaththe-durbanskies.tumblr.com/post/78409957952/it-finally-happened
We got to watch some of the world's most distinguished actors have a pizza party. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE. Also... Ellen drafted Brad freakin' Pitt to be on plate duty and he took his job very seriously.
http://moviehousehusband.tumblr.com/post/78427280488/pizza-won-at-the-oscars
Frank Underwood passed out the veggie pizza in the 12 Years A Slave/August Osage County sections, looking every bit the VP that he is.

http://moviehousehusband.tumblr.com/post/78427280488/pizza-won-at-the-oscars
And once again, Jared Leto made it all about his mama. And I loved it.

http://moviehousehusband.tumblr.com/post/78427280488/pizza-won-at-the-oscars
3. Ellen broke the internet with the #selfie to end all #selfies.
Little know fact- famous people can assemble for a photo opportunity almost as fast as sorority girls. Almost.
http://neverland-with-you.tumblr.com/post/78429871919/new-favorite-gif-with-everybody-jumping-on-ellen
And Jennifer Lawrence was perfectly Jennifer Lawrence when she talked about how to reallyyyyy maximize retweet potential. (Notice Jared Leto and Bradley Cooper's reactions. LOLZ.)

http://perezhilton.com/2014-03-02-oscars-2014-ellen-degeneres-awesome-selfie-twitter
And the finished product a) turned out amazing (seriously, on one try?! not even cool) b) broke Twitter and c) made history by being retweeted over 1 million times. It's well on its way to 3 million retweet. #SuperCasual

And like, you're welcome world because not only did the South give you Beyonce but we also gave you this gem of a human. YOU. ARE. WELCOME.

http://movielala.tumblr.com/post/78407794673/ellen-oscars-movies
 4. Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong'o are ***flawless human beings. The end.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/kimberleydadds/jennifer-lawrence-jokingly-tried-to-steal-lupita-nyongos-osc
5. While we wanted to see Leo win, the Internet's reaction to another loss is even better.
Seriously, another year of these memes is actually perfect.

Weekend Jam: Drunk In Love (Diplo Remix)

http://yoncehaunted.tumblr.com/post/78090588486
A couple of weeks ago, our favorite Southern DJ released a pretty fabulous remix to one of our favorite Southern queen's killllllllller new songs. Anything by Beyonce is ***flawless, obvi, and we are love love loving Diplo (a.k.a. Mississippi born Thomas Wesley Pentz) right now.

http://rocknrave221.tumblr.com/post/48421240795/so-beautiful
But we weren't over of the original "Drunk In Love" yet, so we couldn't fully embrace it. (Let's be real- we aren't over the Super Bowl performance or the Grammys either... oh well.)

So when the girls over at Betches Love This posted about the remix, we gave it another listen. And it's g o o o o o o o o d. Seriously, HOW did we not put this on repeat immediately?? Check it out on YouTube or Diplo's SoundCloud page (both below).

We don't know about you but we don't really plan to listen to anything else this weekend. Seriously.

Demi Lovato's #NeonLightsTour - So Good, I Cried.

So I've been on a concert kick lately, and my most recent concert shenanigans were this weekend in Atlanta with two of my favorite Modern Magnolias. We were in town to see Demi Lovato's Neon Lights Tour. Demi is not only a Texas gal, but she is crazy talented. Since Demi is the definition of what a Modern Magnolia really is, we decided to do a concert recap for y'all!!!
http://pandawhale.com/post/32142/demi-lovato-neon-lights-gif
We started our girls night at Heat Lounge, a blowout and makeup bar in Atlanta, because we obviously had to make sure we looked good for our girl Demi. Let me just say that if you live in/are going to be in the Atlanta area, you should seriously check them out. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing and the stylists and staff were phenomenal. I got to drink champagne, have someone do my hair and makeup, and watch Sex In The City. It was perfect. And I don't know if y'all are going think I'm gross, but I totally didn't have to wash my hair all weekend after my stylist was finished with it. Not sure what she she did exactly, but I need it to happen ALL THE TIME. Y'all should check out Heat Lounge on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HeatLoungeSalon), Twitter (@HeatLounge_ATL), and Instagram (@heatlounge_atlanta). Shout out to my stylist, Lola, for making my hair and makeup look FABULOUS!

Now about the concert...

For starters, we were the oldest people at the Neon Lights Tour that didn't have a minor under the age of 13 with us. Which I was 100% fine (no lines at the bar!).

We missed Fifth Harmony (oops). I'm sure they were really good but I only know like one of their songs so... Oh well. There was also this magician. He did like one cool trick and the pre-teen girls seemed to be really into him.

After the magician performed and the DJ played "Talk Dirty" roughly 347 times (but without the 2 Chainz part, UGH), Little Mix performed and I teared up.
http://25.media.tumblr.com/3d0b3e17144401d739b2ee7bf15bacb8/tumblr_n1h4e1VXOx1tnoacwo1_500.jpg
I legitimately almost cried. Y'all, they were THAT good. Now, if you're not a Little Mix fan, you should go buy their new album and stalk them on YoutTube because they are actual perfection. If Destiny's Child, TLC, and the Spice Girls had a love child, it would be Little Mix.

But for real... TOO FAB.

They did a girl group mash-up featuring 'No Scrubs' and 'Bootylicious' (video above) that A) we were the only ones who knew the words to because everyone else there was like 12 years old and B) was potentially the greatest thing I have ever heard in my entire life. In the same mash-up they sang "Don't Let Go" by En Vogue (they did it on the X-Factor UK--YouTube it) and I LOST MY MIND.

That's me screaming about how I was losing my mind.

When Little Mix headlines their own tour, I'm without a doubt buying backstage passes. I need them to be my best friends.

Demi...

After Little Mix performed the magician came on stage (AGAIN--like I was over it), the queen herself entered the arena and was the most perfect thing I have ever seen. I expected the concert to be good, but this was on an entirely different level. Seriously, DEMI. IS. FLAWLESS. I'm now considering dying may hair pink and I absolutely NEED that black sequin jacket she was wearing.

http://31.media.tumblr.com/d7bd20463e9d641912cfbd4b679b3257/tumblr_n1ft0hW8Cu1tqu5rdo1_500.png
She sang songs from her most recent album and I was obsessed. She also sang "Here We Go Again" and I nearly fainted (I had completely forgotten I knew every single word to that song). My girl Demz didn't stop there. She actually sang "Let It Go" from Frozen and I think we all had a panic attack. But then y'all.. I kid you not. I think I died, came back to life, and died again when she sang "Don't Forget" and threw THE MOST SHADE at Joe Jonas. There was legitimately a video of Demi and fetus Joe in Camp Rock and everything. BUT THAT WASN'T ALL. She literally stopped singing in the middle of the song to dis the middle Jo Bro. Semi-direct quote from Demi: "You forgot about me so I forgot about you." OH. THE. SHADE. Most of us would have been a little wary of calling out our ex-boyfriend in front of thousands of people, especially since Nick Jonas is the Creative/Musical Director for the Neon Lights Tour (props bro, it was amazing). Whatever. Demi's just like:

http://imkindatryingtobecool.tumblr.com/post/76975173779

In short, the concert was perfection. Demi Absolutely commanded the stage and sounded amazing live! If you can get tickets to this concert, DO IT. Demi is everything a Modern Magnolia should be: fabulous, confident and tough as nails. GIRL IS A ROCK STAR.

(Lastly, shout out to the two teenage guys sitting behind us who clearly brought their little sister to the concert. They literally looked up the lyrics to every song and SCREAMED them along with Demi. Highlight of our night.)

SIDE NOTE: The next morning we had brunch at Edgewood Corner Tavern (which was phenom), and we didn't want to admit it to the hipsters working there, but we totally chose this place based on the fact (I did extensive research) that it's where Nina Dobrev and Liam Hemsworth were seen canoodling. No shame, y'all.

P.S. I think Demi is the next Supreme.
We love you Demz!

Much love, y'all..

#ValentinesDay playlist: Karaoke Night

My undying love for karaoke started with one of those 90's karaoke machines in my living room, performing Stevie Wonder songs for anyone willing to watch. Although it is, sadly, no longer 1997 (those were the daysss), my love for karaoke night with the girls has never faltered. Most of my experience has been at the Troubadour, in downtown Nashville (which is probably one of my favorite places on earth), so I've performed an awful lot of Waylon Jennings... Which brings me to a little karaoke tip-- realize where you are in the world. Case in point, don't request a Kendrick Lamar song in Nashville (take it from me, they don't have it).

http://www.omgsamantha.com/the-13-best-faces-britney-spears-made-on-x-factor/
The whole point of karaoke is to have fun and get the other bar-goers singing with you-- unless you are Mariah Carey, in which case, do your thang.

Here are a few of my favorite karaoke songs that are always a crowd pleaser:

  1. Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams
  2. All For You by Sister Hazel
  3. Wannabe by Spice Girls
  4. Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones
  5. No Rain by Blind Melon
  6. Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond
  7. Black Velvet by Alannah Myles
  8. Dixieland Delight by Alabama
  9. PYT by Michael Jackson
  10. Say My Name by Destiny's Child
  11. I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick
  12. Wings by Little Mix
  13. Closing Time by Semisonic
  14. Kiss You by One Direction
  15. Fancy by Reba McEntire
  16. It's Still Rock and Roll to Me by Billy Joel
  17. Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
  18. Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show
  19. Torn by Natalie Imburglia
  20. Santeria by Sublime
  21. Callin' Baton Rouge by Garth Brooks
While I fully recommend spending Valentine's Day at a karaoke bar with your besties, there is always car-aoke en route to dinner with your significant other. It can be almost as fun.
